Program Overview

Thank you for your interest in the Platte Clove Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program.

Since the early 1800’s and the beginning of the American Landscape movement, the Catskill escarpment has remained an enduring source of artistic inspiration for generations of artists. Our residency provides a tranquil and rustic workplace. A retreat for artists, working in a variety of disciplines, located in the living landscape where American landscape art began.

The residency at the Platte Clove cabin is near the villages of Tannersville, Hunter, and Windham in upstate New York. Situated at the Catskill Center’s Platte Clove Preserve, artists will reside in a rustic cabin on the edge of 208 wild, pristine acres full of hiking trails, multi-tiered waterfalls, and old growth forests. The cabin is located along Plattekill Creek, and on several popular trail heads. Hikers are commonly seen around the cabin and in the area.

In the cabin there is electricity, a gas heat stove, a gas cook-top stove/oven, refrigerator, and a telephone. The cabin does not have running water—there is an outhouse behind the building and there are no showers.

The residency is open to visual artists, writers, poets, composers, performing artists, and environmental researchers who have an affinity for the natural world. Residencies can last up to 5 days – Sunday night through Friday evening. The work produced should foster an appreciation of the environment through the aesthetics of art. 

General Information

SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT

The cabin has three twin beds on the second floor and a trundle bed on the main floor. Residents are required to bring their own linens and/or a sleeping bag. Local telephone service is provided, but cell service is weak in Platte Clove, and there is no wi-fi available. Residents are expected to bring their own food, potable water, and supplies for their stay. There is a gas heat stove in the living area for cool nights and though it is summer, it is advised that you bring a light jacket. Many of the inspirational vistas can only be reached by foot and hiking boots are recommended. You must also bring whatever equipment needed to conduct your work.

LOCATION

The Platte Clove cabin is located in a remote section of the Catskills. The nearest grocery store and hospital are 7 miles away. It is suggested that applicants have access to a car during the residency.

Number of artists in Cabin

One artist is selected to stay at the cabin during the week. If the artist would like to bring a spouse or one friend, please note that on the application. No children are allowed in the cabin. If there are multiple artists that are working on the same project they may apply as a group. Group projects should submit one application form and project description. Submit samples and resume for each artist in the group. Up to 3 artists working on the same project may stay in the cabin at one time. 

PETS

Pets are not allowed in the Platte Clove cabin.

ELIGIBILITY

The Artist-in-Residence program accepts residents based on talent. It does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of age, race, sex, sexual orientation religion, marital status, national origin or any other protected class. Please be aware that the Platte Clove cabin is located in a remote area of the Catskill Mountains. Applicants should be able to walk some steep grades and carry personal items down steps into the cabin. Unfortunately, the cabin is not wheelchair accessible.

DATES OF RESIDENCY

The cabin is open for residencies from June 17 through October 25. Residencies can last up to five days. The cabin is available Sunday night through Friday evening. Residencies don’t occur during the weekend. The cabin is located at a trail head near a beautiful waterfall. Visitation is light during the week, but during summer weekends over 100 people can visit the site. 

ORIENTATION MEETING

On Saturday, June 15, 2019 there will be an orientation meeting at the cabin with all accepted applicants. This meeting is mandatory for all accepted artists. Please contact Katie Palm to make other arrangements if you cannot attend orientation.

FEES

There is a $40 application fee for the Artist-In-Residence Program. The stay in the Platte Clove Cabin is free of charge. The application fee includes a one-year membership in the Catskill Center.

DEADLINE

Applications must be received by April 12. Final decisions are shared in early May.
